I can’t believe that I began this amazing cooking and coaching journey 15 years ago this week!
Throughout this time, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients – including families, individuals, companies, organizations and groups. In addition, I’ve written 3 e-cookbooks, chapters in 2 wellness anthologies and co-produced my own local cable TV show. I am now excited to begin taking my organic foods recipes, tips and tricks, cooking demos and news online! We begin with today’s launch of my new blog!
This week’s blog begins as an introduction to what will become my weekly communication regarding organic and whole foods cooking. I am hoping that the info and ideas presented will be fun and helpful for all.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a regular blog and I thought that now was the perfect time. Today we live in an age filled with illness, stress and quarantine. Our western diet, the way that many foods are grown today and our romance with fast-food & carry-out have weakened our immunity. As a result we’ve become more vulnerable to viruses, disease and chronic health conditions. Isn’t it time to make simple and delicious changes “for the health of it”?
According to JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) in 2018, “Poor diet is the most significant contributor to the burden of chronic, lifestyle-related diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
As of May 30 this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that “among COVID-19 cases, the two most common underlying health conditions were cardiovascular disease (32%) and diabetes (30%).” https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6924e2.htm?s
These are issues we all have the power to take control of.
Prior to the invasion of COVID-19 on the American public and the world, I had conducted a number of presentations to businesses, professional groups and wellness groups on the topic of “presenteeism”. Here’s a brief history of the term …
Simply speaking, the term “presenteeism” pertains to being on the job, but not working at 100% capacity. Through recent years, it’s been the costliest issue for business and society today. Major corporations, small businesses, micro or home-based businesses have all experienced the cost of presenteeism. This is often the result of an ongoing medical condition, illness, medication, and/or allergy that impacts our ability to work at 100%. Presenteeism can also apply to lifestyle challenges as basic as a lack of physical wellbeing due to sleep deprivation, nutrition and exercise avoidance, and/or severe stress.
Regardless of the cause, pre-COVID, presenteeism had resulted in the loss of hundreds of billions of dollars, with estimates suggesting up to a 75% loss in productivity. Years back, one research team actually calculated the total cost of presenteeism in the United States to be greater than $150 billion per year. This info demonstrates that the condition of our health, in this country, has not been optimal.
